Why Small to Medium Sized Businesses (SMB) should be using VoIP Series – Part 1

Why Small Business and Medical Offices should use VoIP

Common question we come across for our VoIP PBX implemtation is this:  Why should I invest the time and money into a VoIP PBX system such as Asterisk IP PBX when my analog circuits are working fine for me?

To be straight with you, there are NO benefit to implementing a IP PBX system if all you want to do is to make inbound/ outbound calls and to have callers leave a message on your answering machine.  However, if you want advanced functionality available to PBX systems at fraction of the cost and complexity, then IP PBX is the way to go.  Some ddvanced functions that are possible with IP PBX are listed below:

  • IVR or Interactive Voice Response:  A phone tree that you commonly hear that asks you to push a key for different department, extensions, etc.
  • Customization of Greetings:  Customized greetings depending on time, day, holiday, etc.
  • Call Routing:  Follow me rules, conference calling, virtual conference rooms, call forwarding, group calling, etc.
  • Voicemail to email:  All voicemails are emailed to designated email address to be heard anywhere.
  • Caller ID Manipulation:  Control what CallerID Number and Name shows up to recipients.
  • Multiple Line Appearances:  Staff can have one, two, or as many lines as they need for efficiency.
  • Operator Panel:  3rd Party applications allow the receptionist to view phone status of all users within the company.
  • Softphone for Mobile workers:  Allows mobile workers to use the company phone system through the internet allowing them to receive calls as if they are behind their desk.
  • Ease of maintenance and Cost effective:  Maintenance is streamlined due to remote programming capability and it costs a lot less than traditional PBX system.
The list goes on and on with the above points touching on key points.  In the next series of posts, we will go into detail on the advanced functionality that is possible with IP PBX system using Asterisk.
