Asterisk IP PBX Installation on Amazon AWS EC2 Web Service – Part 2 of 4

Amazon AWS EC2 Web Service can be used for Basic Asterisk IP PBX Installation proving Scalability, Reliability, and Mobility

In this article, I will outline the steps necessary to install CentOs based Asterisk IP PBX version 1.8 onto a Amazon AWS EC2 Cloud Server.  Next two parts will cover the configuration of the Asterisk server and connection of GrandStream GXV3140 Multimedia IP Phone, GrandStream GXV3175 Multimedia IP Phone, and X-Lite Softphone.

Step by Step Guidance:

  • sudo yum update
  • Navigate to /usr/src folder:
  • cd /usr/src
  • Download Asterisk files using wget:
  • sudo wget http://downloads.asterisk.org/pub/telephony/asterisk/releases/asterisk-1.8.8.1.tar.gz
  • sudo wget http://downloads.asterisk.org/pub/telephony/asterisk/releases/asterisk-addons-1.6.2.3.tar.gz
  • Install necessary  files and packages for Asterisk:
  • sudo yum groupinstall ‘Development Tools’
  • sudo yum install -y make gcc ncurses-devel libtermcap-devel kernel-devel zlib-devel libtool
  • Unzip Asterisk and Addon files:
  • sudo tar xvzf asterisk-1.8.8.1.tar.gz
  • sudo tar xvzf asterisk-addons-1.6.2.3.tar.gz
  • Install Asterisk:
  • cd /asterisk-1.8.8.1
  • ./configure –disable-xmldoc
  • make
  • make install
  • make samples
  • sudo make config
  • Install Asterisk Addon files
  • cd /usr/src/asterisk-addons-1.6.2.3
  • ./configure
  • make
  • make install

That’s it for Asterisk installation.  I know I left out LibPRI and DAHDI but they just will not install on the Amazon AWS micro instances.  Last I heard, the newer Asterisk servers don’t necessary have to rely on ztdummy driver for Meetme conferences but only experiment will tell.  We will go over those in future posts.

If you run into any issues, please feel free to contact me via Facebook or Twitter.  I would also like to hear your feedback and comments since there are so many different ways of doing things.  I am always open to learning about new features or new methods of doing things.
